Encryption
What is Encryption?
Encryption is security technology that protects data as it moves between your device and a cam site's servers. On live cam and adult cam platforms, encryption helps ensure that your traffic—including video streams, chat, and payment data—can't be easily read by third parties.
How encryption works on cam sites: when you visit a cam site over HTTPS (look for the padlock in your browser), the connection between you and the site is encrypted. That means your ISP or someone on the same network can see that you're connected to the site but not the details of what you're watching or typing. Reputable cam sites use strong encryption for both the website and, where applicable, for streaming. End-to-end encryption for private messages is less common but is offered by some platforms.
When comparing the best cam sites, a valid HTTPS certificate and a clear privacy or security policy are baseline expectations. For extra privacy on top of encryption, many users combine secure connections with a VPN. For more on privacy and security, see our entries on VPN, anonymity, and discreet billing.
